Living with Crohn’s Disease (CD) can be a daunting task especially when you add on the side effects of medications, costs of treatments, and surgeries on top of the disease’s painful and disruptive symptoms. Many people with Crohn’s find themselves at wits’ end trying to manage their disease after failed medical interventions or suffering the sometimes worse side effects of medications. However, relief can be found in chiropractic care.

Crohn’s is an autoimmune disease that attacks the digestive system. It is thought to be caused by genetics and environmental factors. While diet and stress do not cause the disease, they can make it worse. Presently there is no cure. Symptoms of the disease range from diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramping, and vomiting. CD can also impact your eyes and joints. Typical treatments for Crohn’s involve immunosuppressive drugs, steroids, and surgery.

When one thinks of the digestive system, they probably do not think of the spine or nervous system. However, there is a direct connection between them. Embedded within the digestive system is the enteric nervous system. The enteric nervous system is a large division of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) that can control gastrointestinal behavior unassisted by the central nervous system (CNS).  For many Crohn’s patients, there is an interference in communication between the brain and the digestive system that is due to spinal misalignment. This type of misalignment can be seen as a blockage that prevents patients from fully digesting and removing the foods they eat. A chiropractor can help clear these blockages.

Crohn’s patients commonly deal with inflammation in the gut. This is something that chiropractic care can also assist with healing. Inflammation is often seen as the root cause of many CD ailments, although the specific cause of inflammation remains unknown. Realigning a patient’s spine and other joints can help target the inflammation by calming the nervous system overall. It is important to note that many patients report feeling more relaxed after an alignment, which may also contribute to aiding in stress-related digestive issues.

While more studies are needed to prove the benefits of chiropractic care for Crohn’s, the studies that do exist have been promising. In one study in Japan during the late 90s and early 2000s, researchers found that there was a pattern between patients with spinal distortions and Crohn’s Disease (as well as other related ailments). Researchers observed that patients receiving chiropractic adjustments reported improved symptoms post alignment.

At your first appointment, your chiropractor will ask you questions about your health to learn more about your symptoms and concerns. This helps them decide on the best plan of action to attend to your health care needs. They may perform additional tests (with your consent) to better determine the best plan for you. Once your chiropractor has identified the root cause of your health concerns, they will apply particular methods to help your body heal and regain a sense of balance. At Lazar Spinal Care, we only offer quality chiropractic care. Set up your appointment today!
